Careful attention must always be paid to the weather conditions when any of our students are involved in activities outside of our air-conditioned buildings. Where heat and humidity (heat index) are concerned we must be extremely cautious. The following guideline will act as a minimum practice with regards to dealing with extreme heat conditions:
1. Students must be allowed to consume water at any time that they want a drink.
2. Heat Index below 100 degrees – normal activity as per practice schedule / lesson plans.
3. Heat Index 100-104 degrees – a maximum of 45 minutes of activity between scheduled hydration/rest breaks. These breaks must be at least a minimum of 5 minutes in duration.
4. Heat Index 105-107 degrees – a maximum of 30 minutes of activity between scheduled hydration/rest breaks. These breaks must be a minimum of 5 minutes in duration.
5. Heat Index of 108 degrees (or above) – all outside activity will be suspended and all students must be move to an air-conditioned inside facility until the heat index drops below 108 degrees.
The heat index for our area may be obtained via the internet from the weather channel, local news media outlets, or by contacting our high school Athletic Trainers by phone at the school Athletic Training Room.
Always keep a very close eye on all students when outdoor activities are scheduled during extreme heat conditions and immediately make the necessary changes to practice schedules and plans.
